A decade after MIT's OpenCourseWare project kicked off the Open Educational Resources movement, it's transformed people's ability to share knowledge across the globe. Last fall, Stanford professors Peter Norvig and Sebastian Thrun offered their most popular class to the world for free, and Thrun went on to launch an entire open education platform. MIT launched MITx, which allows anyone to take MIT classes online and earn certificates of completion, and several universities are developing OER libraries stocked with free or low-cost digital course materials.

But despite these revolutionary examples—and the real impact they're making on people's lives—most people still don't know what the OER movement is. To help push awareness of OER into the mainstream, Creative Commons, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Open Society Foundations are taking advantage of the first-ever Open Education Week by launching  "Why Open Education Matters," a video competition that will award cash prizes of up to $25,000 to the "best short videos that explain the use and promise of free, high-quality open educational resources and describe the benefits and opportunities these materials create for teachers, students and schools."

The contest is open through June 5, 2012. A panel of judges—Waiting for ‘Superman’ director Davis Guggenheim, actor and filmmaker James Franco, animator Nina Paley, and yours truly—will choose the winners of the $25,000 grand prize and a $5,000 second prize. The community can vote for its favorite entry, too, with the winner receiving the $1,000 Public Choice Award. I, for one, can't wait to see the creative ways people raise awareness of OER and the way it can transform and democratize education.

"Я хочу поговорить от трех аспектах наших знаний: широта охвата дисциплин, глубина знания дисциплин и связи между дисциплинами.
Считается, что есть два типа людей. Одни любят изучать многое и поверхностно, другие выбирают пару дисциплин и изучают их очень глубоко. Первых обычно называют лисами, вторых — ежами.
Для меня обучение очень похоже на геологоразведку. Представьте себе новый континент. Вы не знаете о нем ничего. Да, вы видите горы, леса, реки, но не имеете особого понятия что там внутри. Вы не знаете, что там за горизонтом, есть ли тут моря, насколько холодно на севере и какая температура на юге.
Вы начинаете с составления карты. Вы посылаете эскпедиции во все стороны и рисуете карту местности. Потом вы начинаете бурить пробные скважины и выяснять состав грунта. Потом вы находите нефть, золото, алмазы и начинаете добычу.

Что надо сделать для более эффективного процесса обучения?

• Включить режим лисы и составить карту территории. Наметить несколько мест, с которых стоит начать углубление в тему.
• Попытаться понять связи между дисциплинами и последовательность их освоения. На высоком уровне это сделать достаточно просто.
• Включить режим ежа и начать прорабатывать тему глубоко. Иногда придется прерываться, и переключаться на смежные темы, иначе более глубокие пласты недостижимы.

Задача хорошего преподавателя — показать ученикам свою карту, объяснить путь и последовательность освоения темы, показать скрытые связи между дисциплинами. Имея на руках такую карту ученик никогда не заблудится."

У грудні 2011 року популярність української Вікіпедії виросла на 50% в порівнянні з груднем 2010 і становила 43,5 мільйона переглянутих протягом місяця сторінок.
В 2011 році було створено 101 тис. нових статей. За числом статей — їх зараз більше 350 тис., українська Вікіпедія протягом року перейшла з 16-го на 14-е місце серед 282 вікіпедій світу.
В 2011 був подоланий ще один рекорд — число активних користувачів (тих що протягом місяця зробили хоча б одну правку), вперше перевищило 2 000.
